Osteopathy

What is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy focuses on facilitating the health of joints and muscles through non-invasive manual therapy, helping to strengthen the framework of the body, and acts as a complementary therapy alongside conventional medicine.

What does an Osteopath do?

[First, in Canada, we call them Manual Osteopathic Practitioners.  In the US, they are doctors and can prescribe medicine.]

A Manual Osteopathic Practitioner’s main focus is to identify areas of the body that are not moving normally and/or are constricted. These areas can be in the musculoskeletal, digestive, reproductive, cardiovascular, respiratory, or nervous systems. Once the restrictions are identified they are treated with precise manual treatment that affects not only the local area but also the body as a whole.  It’s pretty powerful and you’ll often feel it working.

Manual Osteopathy is based on 4 basic principles:

  • Each structure in the body supports the body’s functions. If a structure is damaged, out of place, or not working properly, the body will not function at its best.

  • The natural flow of the body’s fluids – lymphatic, vascular, and neurological – must be preserved and maintained.

  • The human body is the sum of its parts. Its physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and cognitive systems don’t work independently -they work in harmony.

  • When the body has no restrictions, it has the inherent ability to heal itself.

Osteopathy manual practice

Osteopathic manual practitioners recognize that a patient is an integrated whole. When all the body’s components are in balance, a person is complete and in total health.

A few of the many ailments Osteopathy can effectively treat are: back pain (sciatica), carpal tunnel, degenerative disc disease, vertigo, TMJ, headaches/migraines, Concussions, sports injuries, colic in infants, chronic muscle tension, chronic ear infections, and pre and postnatal support.
