Reclaim Your Gut Health

Gastrointestinal issues can be just as uncomfortable to talk about as they are to experience!

How do you know if your gut isn’t healthy?

Bloating, gas, diarrhea, constipation or heartburn are the norm!.  We often laugh many of these ‘symptoms’ off or ignore them but when digestive symptoms become chronic, you may end up with any of the following more serious conditions:

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome

  • Leaky gut

  • Gastro Reflux Disease (GERD)

  • Small Intestine Bowel Overgrowth (SIBO)

  • Ulcers

  • Crohn’s and colitis

  • Chronic constipation, gas, bloating or diarrhea

  • Gall bladder disease

  • Diverticulitis

If you struggle with any of these digestive problems, know that you are not alone!

It is estimated that at least twenty percent of Canadians experience symptoms of GI distress some or most of the time.

A healthy gut is key not only for nutrient status, but also for immunity, vitality, mood, and to regulate inflammation in the whole bod.  I’ll say that again.  Inflammation is regulated in the gut!

Think about that for a second!

And here’s the thing.

An unhealthy gut does not always manifest in digestive symptoms-other symptoms may range from fatigue to joint pain to skin problems!  So yes, your acne and achy elbows could be due to your gut health!

Increasingly, evidence indicates that gut health impacts overall health.  And remember, the gut microbiome plays a critical role in mediating the effects of diet and other factors, including digestive, immune, metabolic and nervous system imbalances.

Which means that assessing GI health helps get to the root cause of many chronic illnesses.

If you want to improve your gut health, we need to first address your underlying issues, and then rebuild your gut from the bottom up!

Approach: 5 R’s

  1. REMOVE the foods, chemicals, medicines and unfriendly gut microbes that are causing inflammation and “leakiness” of the gut

  2. REPLACE with beneficial digestive enzymes and an anti-inflammatory diet

  3. RE-INOCULATE with pre and probiotics to maintain and defend gut integrity

  4. REPAIR the gut lining with key nutrients to promote healing

  5. REBALANCE by addressing issues that impact the gut, like stress, sleep and daily food choices.

The process of gut healing and repair takes time, commitment and perseverance. This program takes six months of targeted coaching and tests, which is pretty incredible considering you are resetting your digestion, rebuilding your gastrointestinal system, and overcoming the chronic conditions that may have developed over many years!

Comprehensive Approach:

To move things along more quickly, consider either of the following:

Food Sensitivity Testing:

Uncovering your specific list of food sensitivities provides a great foundation to any health care plan.

Food sensitivity testing in done in our office by Jennifer Kaster, one of our Naturopathic Doctors, using Electrodermal Screening (EDS).  EDS testing is done as part of a naturopathic visit and you get the results right away. Most extended health insurance plans will cover naturopathic visits, therefore it will cover this test.

GI Map Test.

Overwhelmingly, research indicates that gut health impacts overall health. The gut microbiome, in particular, plays a critical role in mediating the effects of diet and other factors on health, including digestive, immune, metabolic and neuroendocrine functions. Assessing GI health with the help of a Naturopath can get to the root cause of chronic illness faster..

The GI-MAP (Microbial Assay Plus) is unique in the field of comprehensive stool testing. It relies exclusively on quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) technology to detect parasites, bacteria, fungi, and more, by targeting the specific DNA of the organisms tested.
